The Ember Glen

Minor Arcana

Bring what you mean to keep and walk it between my fires. The rest was kindling anyway.

Who they are

A hidden glen in the Otherworld where the year itself comes to burn. It is always Beltane night here: the great need-fire roaring on its cairn at the crest, rings of smaller fires down the dark slopes, gorse in gold bloom catching the light, sparks rising in straight bright tongues to a field of stars. At the glen's mouth stands a threshold-stone hung with rowan; somewhere below, cattle move between two fires, the way the herds were driven between the Beltane flames to be cleansed for summer — the old idiom "between two fires" was born right there. And the great fire is a need-fire: kindled wood on wood while every hearth stood dark, so the new year's flame owed nothing to the old. This glen is where that fire lives when no one on our side is burning it.

Drawn upright — the teaching

You're in the valley where the old gets burned away to make room for the new — the move, the ending you chose, the habit finally on the pyre. It's a cleansing, not a punishment. The heat is real, and so is the other side: you come out of this clear.

The working

Walk the cleansing fire on purpose. Name what you're keeping — the people, the work, the few true things — and drive them between the two flames the way the herds were purified: set two candles an arm apart, carry each kept thing's name between them, and say, "This comes with me, cleansed." Then let the rest burn: the list of what's over goes into the flame entire, no half-charred rescues. Beltane is this working's own appointment; failing that, the night you're finally ready is Beltane enough.

Drawn reversed — the shadow

This fire took far more than it needed and left the whole valley in ash. Change with no restraint doesn't renew — it scorches to bare ground: the purge that ate the good with the bad, the fresh start that torched friendships, savings, health on its way out the door.

The undoing

Pull the flames back from what's still green. Stop feeding a burn that's past its purpose — end the purge, the rage-clearing, the scorched-earth exit — today, mid-blaze if that's where you are. Then save the seed for next year: choose the few living things the fire hasn't reached — one friendship, one habit, one corner of the old life worth replanting — and set them deliberately beyond the burn line. Not every burning is holy; some is just loss wearing purification's mask. Learn the difference before you strike the next match.

Its tree · the ogham

Onn and Luis stand together at the glen's mouth — gorse to feed the holy fire, rowan to hold the threshold so the fire stays holy. Blaze and ward, cut side by side into the cairn-stones: the glen's whole law in two letters. Burn with purpose. Burn guarded.

Sit with this

What in your life genuinely needs to burn — and what's only in the fire because you were angry the day you lit it?
