The Faery Ring
Of course you may join the dance. Everyone may join the dance. Leaving it is the part we charge for.
Who they are
A perfect ring of pale mushrooms on the moonlit Beltane meadow — and read the grass before you read anything else: inside the ring it grows withered, where the dancing wore the life out of the ground; just outside it grows lush and dark, where something was fed. Real rings grow exactly that way — one circle starved, one circle fattened — so the meadow itself writes the warning. This is where the Good Neighbours dance. The tales are consistent about the terms: a night inside passes as years outside; the taken dancer is pulled free by a chain of hands with the last man's foot planted firmly beyond the ring; cattle won't graze it; the plough goes around. Glow-worms light the centre. A dropped ribbon lies in the grass, and nobody has come back for it.
Drawn upright — the teaching
You're being invited into something wild and alive — an inspiration, a love affair with the craft, a scene, a season with the senses thrown wide. Doors like this are rare and you should go in. On terms. The ring opens both ways only for the ones who set their exit before their entrance.
The working
Before you enter — the residency, the deep dive, the all-consuming work — set the way back first. One foot outside the ring: an anchor kept deliberately beyond it — the friend charged with calling you home, the standing Sunday, the bill paid ahead. Coat inside-out: one daily habit that breaks the glamour, kept without exception. And don't take the food or the dance they offer — nothing you'd have to stay to keep. Enter like that and the door lets you in — and lets you out.
Drawn reversed — the shadow
You stepped in careless, and it's got you — the thrill you can't stop, the party that never ends, the obsession that eats time whole. Dance one night, surface to find years gone. Ask anyone who's "lost a decade" to anything; every one of them remembers the night it was still just a dance.
The undoing
Turn your coat inside-out: today, do the exact reverse of the ring's routine — the hour, the route, the crowd. Plant one foot outside: put one appointment with the world beyond the ring in the calendar and keep it like a rescue, because it is one. And refuse the next dance and the fairy cup — the next round, the next hit, the next "one more." Some highs don't let go. Keep the way out before you go in, and if you're already in — the way out is one refused dance wide.
Its tree · the ogham
Beith — the birch, cut on the stone beside the ring. The first letter: one plain stroke, the alphabet's opening step. The way out of any circle is the same as the way into a life — one clean first stroke, taken sober.
Sit with this
Which ring are you dancing in right now — and where, exactly, is your foot outside it? If you can't point to it, you're already inside.
